How to Chat on Tinder

How does one meet their soulmate in today’s world? Gone are the days of waiting for the guy to make the first move. Gone are also the days where people had to go through elaborate courting routines. Now, finding someone you can spend some time with, if not your whole life, is easier than ever before. When someone asks what the easiest way to find a date is, the simple and popular answer would be to go on Tinder. Tinder has become synonymous with dating and hooking up. One reason is its ease and simplicity of use. All you really have to do is make your profile, load a few pictures, enter a short description of yourself and start matching with people. But, once the matches start rolling in, the next big question arises; how to chat on Tinder so you can turn that match into a date.

As easy as the app may seem, Tinder has its nuances. You need to know how to build your profile, who to match with and how to talk to someone you have matched with. It is only with this information and all the right tools that you can move forward with a Tinder match. In order to understand how to chat on Tinder, you first need to know that there are two ways to go about it; you can officially send messages to your matches or you can contact those who haven’t matched with you unofficially.

How to Chat on Tinder

So, you matched with someone on Tinder and now want to move on to the talking bit of it. What do you do? Well, first, don’t panic. Sending a message on Tinder is as easy as swiping on someone. You can follow the below steps to figure out how to do it:

  • Turn on your phone and open the Tinder app.
  • If you have already linked your profile with Facebook and logged in, move on to the next step. If you haven’t, you can do it now.
  • Now, swipe away until you find your perfect match.

  • Once you match with someone, tap on the speech bubble icon on the upper, right corner of the screen.
  • Then, from the list of your matches (if you have a whole list), select the match you want to send a message to.
  • Next, in the bottom left of the screen, select “Message” to open the message window.
  • Type the message you want to send your match and tap “Send”.

Using the messaging option of Tinder is basically the same as any other messaging app. All you have to do is type your message in the box provided and send it when you’re done. Similar to other app, the message is queued if the receiver isn’t online, or it is delivered instantly if they are. On their end, the person receiving the message can reply to it as they would on any other messenger.

How to Send a Message to Someone You Haven’t Matched With

There are often times when you come across the perfect profile, someone you know you would be a great match with, but you’re scared they might not match with you on Tinder. If you still want to make sure you can contact them after you swipe right and they don’t, there is a way to do it. However, before using that method, think hard and long because there has to be a reason that person didn’t swipe right on you.

Still, if you want to throw caution to the wind and go ahead with contacting them anyway, ask yourself a few questions before doing so. First, will contacting them outside of Tinder, without a match, be considered something a stalker would do? Would they think of you as some kind of creep for looking for them outside of Tinder? Maybe you believe they would realize that not swiping right on you was the biggest mistake of their life? While we know which of these responses is most likely to be true, only you can decide whether you want to go through with it or not. So, if you still want to contact them outside Tinder, here’s how you can do it:

  • Open Tinder and log in with your Facebook profile.
  • Swipe through the people until you come across the person you want to contact.
  • Before swiping on them, make sure you save their profile picture.
  • Now, try your luck and swipe right. If they match with you, great, you can chat with them on Tinder. If they don’t match with you, move on to the next step.
  • Open Google Images by visiting images.google.com and select the camera icon.

  • Here, select the option “Upload an image” and upload the profile picture you saved.
  • Then, select “Search by image”.

Since Tinder connects your Facebook profile to create your account, a lot of people have the same picture as their Facebook profile picture. If not, they are likely to use the same picture they have used elsewhere on their other social media platforms. If either of these scenarios are true, Google Images will find the picture through reverse image search. Once Google has found the image, you have the option to contact the person through whatever means that image brings forth. However, do it at your own discretion.

What Should You Say in Your Tinder Message?

Do you consider yourself to be a confident person? Someone who can talk to people easily, without any fear? Well, you’re among the lucky few, because a lot of people often have no idea what they should or can say to someone, especially someone they like and are interested in. If you just don’t know how to come across as the smooth, confident person you know you are, you can always take some help from the tips we have mentioned here for you. This will not only help you better understand how to chat on Tinder, but also make the process easier for both you and your match.

  • You may be tempted to start a conversation with a simple “Hi” or a “How are you?”, but that is the worst thing you can start with. It is bound to fail every time, and even if it doesn’t, you both start off at a very boring point, which is unlikely to get any better.
  • Go through the person’s profile to get a better understanding of who they are. Use this information in your opening line; reference to something they have mentioned, such as their likes or interests. If you’re naturally funny, you can start with a joke, but if you’re not naturally funny, avoid making jokes.
  • After going through the person’s profile, you should be able to tell whether you have any common interests or traits. Do you both love Harry Potter? Or going out for adventures? Or maybe you’re both huge coffee addicts. Whatever the common interest is, try making a reference to it.
  • One way to get someone excited about talking to you is by provoking an emotion in them. Make sure the emotion is positive, such as happiness, curiosity, surprise or excitement.
  • Do not talk about their body or their looks. In fact, don’t talk about your own either. The only time you can reference is if the message is somehow is unique and interesting.
  • Ask questions that show you are genuinely interested in the answers. You are more likely to succeed with a match if your questions are unique, interesting and intelligent.
  • Make sure you proofread your message before sending it. No one likes grammar or spelling mistakes. Although people don’t go around appreciating other people’s correct usage of English, they do get annoyed with its wrong use.
  • Avoid the texting language where you unnecessarily abbreviate everything. For instance, “text” becomes “txt”. No one think typing like that is cool, and you are likely to annoy the other person if you talk like that.

These are all general tips that you would do well to use while messaging anyone on Tinder. However, when creating a perfect message, make sure you tailor it according to the person you are sending it to. Since you’re going through the profile and images of the person you matched with anyway, it would be a good investment if you took your time, got a feel for the person, and then formulated the message according to their personality. You have to think about whether coming up with something unique is worth the time it will take in exchange for a potential date with that person. If it is, then take your time and think of something clever, or interesting, or funny to start the conversation with.

The thing people don’t know about Tinder is that you get out of it what you put into it. If you don’t make any effort, then your matches and you Tinder experiences will reflect that. Even if you fail to do what you intend to for the first few times, at least you’ll gain some experience and understand what works with Tinder, and what needs to be avoided. All this information is ultimately going to help you get a better match so it’s worth it.
