Facebook; an American online social media or social networking site, is also listed on the NASDAQ. You can imagine the brute force of the company by just looking at their revenue figures of $27.638 Billion (2016). Since 2004, gradually Facebook became one of the biggest name in the social networking platforms. It’s on everyone’s minds all the time. All they can think of is that what status should we upload, what profile picture we need to upload, what photos can shared with friend, or what to comment on a friend’s “In a Relationship” status update. Over the years, Facebook have kept their pace along with the society and its norms and values to become the face of our social interactions’ medium. It’s no longer the networking site just to upload a status or send a private message to your secret crush, rather it have grown over the years to become one of the most widely used forum to raise a social issue or use it to spread a social awareness message. Not just that, also if you’re looking to start up your own business and your low on budget, Facebook can be just the thing for you. Create your own page, start by posting stuff, and voila you’re good to go. While we’re on the subject of using Facebook for other various matters, Facebook itself is not left behind in all the market or society’s trends changing dynamically.
Talking about keeping up with the society, Facebook continuously needs to evolve itself around the world’s trends and strengthen their own inner principles in their organization. To keep up with the changing environment, it needs to be creative and yet, meaningful. Because, there’s no future of being a creative and lame. That way you’ll end up in the long list of social networking sites such as Orkut or Msn Messenger. But Facebook is smart enough to realize the market vacuums and fill in the gaps which are necessary to be filled. If not by Facebook, someone else will come to fill in those vacuums.
So, how does the Facebook do it? One such example is to ‘Make a Temporary Facebook Profile Picture’. What is a temporary Facebook profile picture if you may ask? Temporary Facebook Profile Picture is just your regular Display Picture with an addition of a filter or an effect that will temporarily change your picture for a brief period of time or for a set duration. If you don’t want to add a filter or an effect to your existing display picture, you can also upload a picture of your choice and make it a temporary Facebook profile picture. In order to make it easier for the people to change their profile pictures in the light of various events such a social issue or supporting your home country in the world cup or even celebrate a new legislation being implemented by the Federal court, Facebook introduced this feature in 2015. The popularity escalated with high profile personalities or celebrities using this feature and now making a temporary Facebook profile picture is easier than ever.
How it all started?
Facebook began the testing of their new feature “Temporary Profile Picture” somewhere back at the start of 2015. This feature caught everyone’s attention when Facebook itself started promoting it saying stuff about temporary profile picture and why we should also try it. But it became a famous global phenomenon when the Supreme Court of USA ruled in favor of gay marriages, people from all over the world, race, gender, country, or culture came forward to support this ruling. People’s reactions and favor quickly took on the social networking sites by storm. People began commenting and sharing their views on the famous historical milestones in the fight for the equal human rights for everyone. Facebook quickly recognized the opportunity and introduced the feature. It became a thing on its own. Facebook gained from the opportunity and the people won by raising their voice on the individual basis. They could now change their profile picture in favor of the equal rights movements by making a temporary Facebook profile picture, specifically adding the rainbow effect to the existing profile picture to give it a supporting look for the LGBT community. On another occasion in 2015, after the November Paris Terrorist attacks, you can recall the people changing their profile pictures temporarily in favor of the French government and French people to show their gratitude and their condolences with them. On that point in time, people realized that that Facebook doesn’t always have to be just for fun social interaction site, it can also be a useful and meaningful medium to deliver your message to the world or the masses. It’s more than just well-shot selfies or Display Pictures, it can also be a leader in providing social justice.
